In a significant move towards advancing the hydrogen industry, Japan’s engineering giant IHI Corporation has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Gentari Hydrogen, a subsidiary of Malaysia’s national oil company, Petronas. This collaboration aims to explore the development of the global green ammonia value chain, encompassing production, transportation, storage, and utilization of green ammonia across the Asia-Pacific region and other areas of mutual interest.

Under the MoU, IHI and Gentari will jointly investigate the potential for commercializing the all-ammonia-fueled gas turbine, IM270, developed by IHI with the support of Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). The commercial demonstration of this ammonia engine is expected to commence in 2026. The partnership seeks to create demand for green ammonia in Malaysia and other Asia-Pacific regions, accelerating the adoption of clean hydrogen as a viable lever for energy transition. This initiative aligns with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap and Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap, as well as the region’s aspirations for a carbon-neutral future.

The collaboration between IHI and Gentari represents a significant step forward in leveraging hydrogen technology to drive sustainable energy solutions. By fostering the development of the green ammonia value chain, the partners aim to contribute to the global effort in reducing carbon emissions and promoting clean energy alternatives.
