Daimler Trucks has announced a new development phase in hydrogen fuel cell truck technology, with the establishment of a Mercedes-Benz GenH2 hydrogen fuel cell truck customer trial fleet. The fleet, which includes partners such as Amazon, Air Products, Ineos, and Howard, comprises five Mercedes-Benz semi-trailer liquid hydrogen heavy trucks. These trucks will be deployed on specific routes in Germany for various long-haul applications, including the transportation of building materials, maritime containers, and cylinder gases.
The preliminary trials for zero-carbon long-haul transportation are planned to commence in mid-2024. The customer trial fleet will utilize the “sLH2 technology” (subcooled liquid hydrogen refueling process) developed in collaboration with Linde. During the trial period, the GenH2 trucks will be closely monitored by Mercedes-Benz Trucks and refueled at designated public liquid hydrogen refueling stations in the regions of Wörth am Rhein and Duisburg.
The customer trial offers clients the opportunity to experience fuel cell technology in everyday use, while also enabling Daimler’s engineering team to gain a better understanding of customer needs and use cases for mass development. This initiative marks a significant step forward in the advancement of sustainable transportation solutions and Daimler Trucks’ commitment to achieving carbon-neutral mobility.
